Mobius + Jason Treuting at Good Child Music // October 24

On Thursday, October 24, the good people of NYC will be treated to a double-billed release show at Good Child Studios.

Mobius Percussion Quartet is releasing a DVD of their performance of Kate Neal’s What Hath II. The work, like much of her music, is inspired by her father, who was a Landing Signal Officer with the US Navy. As a result, Neal grew up learning morse code and seeing her father use visual signals to relay directions to pilots. What Hath II utilizes a dark environment penetrated by the blinking of flashlights, coordinated rhythmically with woodblocks, desk bells, mixing bowls, and other found percussion instruments. The work is as theatrical as it is musical; in a spectacularly energetic finale, the ensemble shouts “What hath God wrought?”.  Brooklyn-based Mobius, which has been active in the NYC area for a number of years, will be performing a short set during the evening–including performances of What Hath II, Stones by Wally Gunn, and more.

Also on the show is the music of Jason Treuting, composer and member of new music powerhouse ensemble Sō Percussion. Treuting will be releasing recordings of Extremes A- and B-sides. Extremes, originally a smaller portion of an evening-length work called Imaginary City (premiered by Sō at BAM in 2009), is reworked on a B-side track recently recorded by Sō Percussion. Jason’s Paper Music (my music box music) and Drums and Drones (from Diorama) will be performed by Mobius during their set.

Here’s the trailer for What Hath II, as well as links for Mobius and Jason.
